Sine Artificial Intelligence (AI) Use Policy for Educational Content Development and Student Expectations
Purpose
Sine recognizes that artificial intelligence (AI) can significantly improve productivity, creativity, accessibility, and efficiency throughout the educational development process. This policy establishes the acceptable use of AI for both Sine personnel and students while preserving the technical integrity, originality, professional responsibility, and educational quality expected of all Sine products.
Our educational products are developed by qualified subject matter experts. AI is a productivity tool—not a subject matter expert.
PART I – CONTENT DEVELOPMENT GUIDELINES
Guiding Principle
AI may assist in the development of educational materials, but it shall never replace the professional knowledge, judgment, technical expertise, instructional philosophy, or educational responsibility of a qualified author.
The author or development team remains fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, technical validity, educational effectiveness, and regulatory compliance of all published content.
Acceptable Uses of AI
AI may be used to improve efficiency during course development using AI platforms approved by Sine. Acceptable uses include, but are not limited to:
Developing preliminary outlines and course structures.
Organizing instructor-provided material.
Assisting with grammar, spelling, readability, and formatting.
Improving writing clarity without changing technical intent.
Brainstorming instructional approaches or learning activities.
Generating draft assessment questions that are independently reviewed and validated by the author.
Assisting with SCORM development, interaction design, navigation, accessibility, and instructional flow.
Creating original diagrams, illustrations, conceptual artwork, animations, or other visual aids when appropriate.
Assisting with programming, scripting, automation, or multimedia production.
Summarizing author-provided reference material for internal development purposes.
Assisting with research by identifying potential references, standards, or technical resources that are independently verified by the author.
Prohibited Uses
AI shall not be used as the primary creator of educational or technical content.
The following uses are prohibited:
Generating complete course lessons intended for publication without substantial author development.
Producing technical explanations that have not been reviewed and approved by a qualified subject matter expert.
Creating calibration procedures, laboratory methods, uncertainty analyses, decision rules, technical guidance, or instructional demonstrations solely through AI generation.
Replacing original lectures, demonstrations, instructional philosophy, or professional expertise with AI-generated content.
Presenting AI-generated information as authoritative without independent technical verification.
Using AI to fabricate references, citations, standards, technical data, manufacturer specifications, or source material.
Circumventing peer review or technical approval through AI-generated content.
Substantial author development means the qualified author originates the technical concepts, instructional approach, demonstrations, examples, technical interpretations, and educational objectives. AI may assist with organization, wording, formatting, and presentation, but it shall not originate the instructional content.
Human Review Requirements
Every educational product shall receive substantive human review before publication.
The qualified author is responsible for confirming:
Technical accuracy.
Consistency with applicable standards and industry best practices.
Educational quality and readability.
Originality of instructional content.
Appropriate technical terminology.
Suitability for the intended audience.
Technical neutrality, factual accuracy, and freedom from misleading or unsupported claims.
Responsibility for published content cannot be delegated to an AI system.
Original Intellectual Property
The educational value of Sine products derives from the knowledge, experience, instructional methods, demonstrations, technical interpretations, and professional judgment of qualified subject matter experts.
AI may assist in presenting this expertise more effectively, but it shall not become the originator of Sine's technical interpretations, teaching philosophy, educational methodology, or professional expertise.
Primary lectures, instructional concepts, demonstrations, examples, and technical interpretations shall originate from qualified human authors or development teams.
Development Traceability
Consistent with the principles of metrology, Sine values traceability throughout the educational development process.
When practical, developers should retain sufficient documentation to demonstrate the origin and evolution of technical content. Documentation may include lecture notes, instructor presentations, source references, applicable standards, laboratory demonstrations, review comments, revision history, and other supporting development records.
The use of AI shall not obscure the human origin, technical review, or accountability for instructional content.
Confidentiality and Data Protection
Developers shall not enter confidential customer information, proprietary calibration procedures, unpublished course materials, protected intellectual property, personally identifiable information, export-controlled information, or other sensitive data into AI systems unless the platform has been specifically approved by Sine for handling such information.
All applicable contractual, legal, regulatory, and confidentiality obligations remain in effect when AI tools are used.
AI-Generated Images and Multimedia
AI-generated graphics, illustrations, animations, and conceptual artwork may be used when they improve understanding or when suitable source material is unavailable.
Whenever practical:
Illustrations should accurately represent real-world equipment, calibration practices, laboratory environments, and accepted measurement principles.
Images depicting instruments, laboratory setups, or documented procedures should be reviewed for technical accuracy before publication.
AI-generated conceptual illustrations should be identified through captions or other appropriate means whenever practical so students understand they are educational representations rather than photographs of actual laboratory configurations.
Verification of Technical Information
AI-generated technical information shall never be accepted solely because it was produced by an AI system.
AI systems may generate inaccurate, fabricated, outdated, incomplete, or misleading information that appears authoritative. All technical information shall be independently verified using applicable standards, manufacturer documentation, peer-reviewed references, laboratory experience, or qualified subject matter expertise before publication.
Transparency
Sine supports the responsible use of AI as a production tool while maintaining human authorship and technical accountability.
The use of AI during development does not diminish the responsibility of the author, reviewer, technical approver, or organization for the final published material.
PART II – STUDENT EXPECTATIONS
Guiding Principle
Sine encourages students to leverage modern technology to enhance their learning experience. AI can be an effective educational aid, but it cannot replace the critical thinking, technical judgment, problem-solving skills, or practical understanding required to master metrology and technical sciences.
Students are encouraged to use AI to improve their understanding—not to substitute for their understanding.
Acceptable Student Uses
Students may use AI as a supplementary learning tool, including:
Explaining technical concepts in simpler language.
Creating personalized study plans.
Summarizing personal notes.
Brainstorming project ideas.
Organizing assignment outlines.
Checking grammar, spelling, and writing clarity.
Assisting with language translation.
Prohibited Student Uses
To maintain academic integrity and ensure genuine skill development, students may not use AI to bypass the learning process.
Prohibited uses include:
Generating answers for quizzes, examinations, or graded assessments.
Submitting AI-generated content as original work without proper attribution when attribution is required.
Using AI to fabricate calibration results, laboratory data, measurement values, uncertainty budgets, or practical exercise results.
Relying on AI as an authoritative source for technical standards, calibration procedures, safety requirements, or regulatory guidance without verifying the information against official course materials or authoritative references.
Academic Integrity
Submitting unedited or minimally edited AI-generated content as one's own original work constitutes a violation of Sine's academic integrity expectations.
Students should be prepared to explain, defend, demonstrate, and apply the knowledge reflected in any assignment they submit.
Policy Review
Artificial intelligence technologies continue to evolve rapidly. Sine reserves the right to revise this policy as AI capabilities, educational best practices, legal requirements, cybersecurity considerations, and industry expectations continue to develop.
Policy Statement
Artificial intelligence is intended to enhance the efficiency of educational development and serve as a supplementary learning aid—not replace the knowledge, judgment, creativity, accountability, or professional responsibility of qualified metrology professionals or students.
The integrity of Sine educational content and student achievement shall always remain grounded in human expertise, professional review, sound technical practice, and a commitment to excellence.
